Happy End of Frigid January

Our puppy, Ginger, continues to grow. She could be around 12 lbs by now. We've enjoyed puppy classes with her where she has learned several commands. Her best command is "sit"... we're not so great at the others, but we're getting there. Recently we ventured to sunny Florida for a vacation with our daughter. Ginger was in a puppy hotel and she loved it. It was her first time actually socializing with other dogs. This week we're getting back into our walking routine, and she has to go outside more than when we were in FL.

Hubby and I started puppy training classes for Ginger. Turns out we are the ones being trained. (we figured this would be the case!)

Her Jack Russell Terrier traits are showing and she's such a joy to have in our family.

I have some new colors to introduce into my shop for the new year. Now that I can schedule time for Ginger to be crated while I work (until her puppy days are over) there will soon be splashes of new hues in my etsy shop, AutumnLeavesJewelry.

After discovering Terry's shop on Etsy, LostSierra, I've fallen in love with setting stones again. If you get a chance check out his shop, but hurry, his stones go fast. Been baking a lot of banana bread for a colleague of J's, and pumkin bread for home.

Each Sunday J's dad comes over for the game and then more games (on tv). It's a sweet day, we have a home cooked meal and naps, lol. It does make me miss my father who has relocated to San Diego.

New Turquoise Silver smithed piece just listed

This is a magnificent piece. The stone is a Nevada mined piece, so gorgeous you'll want to touch it as you wear it.

The bezel I created has details that continue up the circular chain. The chain is made from 13 gauge sterling silver. (This is super thick silver) I felt this stone deserved nothing but dazzling sterling metal around it. The links were given a texture. (Each link and all parts were handmade by me, all parts have been soldered)

She is 20" in length from chain to chain. Even the bale is made by these hands.

My makers mark is on the back, along with the decade, and a USA and .925 stamp.

Meet Ginger

She was adopted this morning, she's about 8 weeks old and currently snoring in a little box with a soft blanket in my studio. Perfect timing with her availability as last Monday my jewelry saw slipped into my left pointer finger requiring two little stitches.

After toddling around the kitchen she crawled into my lap

We took a trip to Pet Smart for a collar, harness and food. Am looking into Free-cycle for some baby gates, if anyone in the area has any they no longer need I would love to unload them from you! :-)

She passed out on way home from store with her head in purse. She's had lots of new excitement today. We think she's a beagle-lab mix, will be seeing vet later this afternoon.

I feel so thankful and grateful she came into our family! I hope everyone has a wonderful and warm Thanksgiving! :-)

oh boy...

It's quick pickins over at his shop when he lists, they go fast, though I noticed he saves a few for after the big rush. I was able to reserve these ahead of time.

There were a few outside the turquoise range I really wanted, and boy where they reserved fast. This is fine, because unless I sell more out of my etsy shop I won't have the funds to keep collecting and making gorgeous items from this guys shop!

I had a very fruitful day making 2 of these..pics of the other one later (the other I made just for me, partly because I LOVE the stone, and partly because...well you'll see tomorrow)

So...will be listing this one later if my laptop allows, I dropped the whole thing onto my wood studio floor, yep, kaboom. It wasn't pretty, less pretty was the cussing that ensued. (forgive me)

Anyway, I'm very happy with this ring, it is so magnificent (stone) and so well set (me) that I am proud to list it in my Etsy shop, AutumnLeavesJewelry.

On a personal note, I'm back in physical therapy and loving the results of the hard work its producing. (though some mornings I'm quite grumpy as I get reay to head over to the facility) All in all both knees are not great so I'm working on building the muscles surrounding them. On my left knee my Baker's Cyst is back, or a new one has formed? (nothing to do with baking,lol, named after the doc that discovered it). Anyway...lots of arthritis in both knees...just got a great pair of Super Feet (orthotics) which will make working out more fun.

I'm currently craving a pb & j sammich, so I'm off to make one.

Oh, and I just had my hair cut at Aveda, it was getting long...so...it's shorter and I loooove the new do, but won't put a pic up till hubby sees it.

This is my take on my grandmother's old pendant she often wore. There are some variations I couldn't (and wouldn't) make an exact copy. I just love it, it was a joy to make. Each piece was sawed, filed, soldered, chased and made by me, with my hands. (not that there's anything wrong with it, but you won't find any bead caps in my pieces...)

I'm back on facebook, I tried to get an account with just my shop name but it wouldn't let me because I still had an "existing" account, even though I'd deleted it. Anyway, it IS nice to be connected back with so many dear friends online, cross the Pond, and be able to see photos and other fun news as it pops up.

I plan to still spend more time in my studio than facebook...I just watched The Social Network again, and I agree with one of the lines told to S. Parker, "It's freakishly addicting."

We are currently having our 3rd estimate for a full new flat roof done (beyond just patching) so hubby is downstairs sharing coffee and gathering quotes.

I'm currently being drawn back by my muse into making more Native pieces. I've been to the library and have been sketching out some designs, I feel SO strongly about getting these pieces out there for you.

I love the look of older pieces made by Native Americans, each cut by hand, each soldered uncast pieces, the worn areas, the natural patina gathered over the years. And as always I think so fondly of my grandmother (I love you grandma)

October birthday babies, I made you this Mexican Fire opal; this bright brilliant orange opal ring.

The opal ring is set into a wing-like motif with Sterling silver and 14k rose and 14k yellow golds.

My makers mark is on the back, there is a heart shaped cut out on the back where the stone sits to allow light to shine through.

As you can see, the stone is beautifully domed. Seated next to each side of this brilliant opal is a 14k yellow gold dot and a 14k rose gold dot.

This proud ring is a size 9.

I am a size 8 and can easily wear it with a set of 3 chunky rings in my size(8). I cannot resize this ring.

Yesterday we walked along the beach and I found several pieces of sea glass, this one was a total joy to see!

the tide was low and we were able to see a big drop off area with sand bars beyond.

Toward the end of my work day in the studio Johnny arrived to attach my new revolving vise. My stepped bracelet mandrel fits in so well, I love it. And I love this man...even if he loves chasing a little white golf ball around a big green grassy area more than attaching a vise for me :-)

I was in a creative timeless zone earlier and my thoughts were racing ahead with new pieces to start.

One Day At A Time

Is feeling more like one hour at a time, one breath at a time. Today will be long, and sometimes feel fast. Some big changes are occurring here and I'm rolling with the punches. Sometimes a punch can feel just like a big ocean wave you know the ones you love to ride or try to stand through as they pass near the shoreline?

Speaking of punches, I did just an hour ago receive my own Swanstrom circle punch set, I'm so excited. I have been borrowing my friend Jodi's, she has a Pepe, (I still love you Pepe).

There must be a golf game on because Grandpa Bert and hubby are downstairs and every now and then I hear commentary followed by some yelling. This morning Johnny played golf with a neighbor. He managed to get two 9-hole rounds in this holiday weekend, despite the rain, or threat of.

My knees have taken their toll. I'm on semi-bed rest today, but you can't keep me down long. My left knee is experiencing numbness and tingling, it's the knee which I've had surgery on. My right knee is another story. It's giving me a lot of pain. It doesn't like stairs, walking, bending, generally moving about causes it pain. I've done some Googling, and just said "eh" because I feel I know the drill with the whole knee thing (get it? Drill?) Rest, Ice, Elevation...hopefully tomorrow I'll be up and about. All of this because I believe I sat in an awkward position for too long, and I also trod across part of a wood floor in my jeans, on my knees, who knew?!

I'm counting the days till the new Haruki Murakami book comes out...until then I'm looking for a new read...any suggestions???

Wish I had set up the tripod for a group shot...Becky did pose her gorgeous hands for me for several of my rings which really needed to be shown worn. I'll leave those for tomorrow...right now I'll just enjoy the quiet of the house now that everyone has gone onto the rest of their evenings.

Last night we enjoyed dinner at our friends new home. Dinner was fantastic, the company was better, and they moved a nice distance so we can easily walk to each others homes. :-)

Yesterday I was SO excited to receive an order of tools and things, alas, my stepped bracelet mandrel was missing...it seems something was lost in translation during my order process. I do own a very cool - new - rotating mandrel vise though, can't wait to attach it to the long table hubby will construct. I admit I was bummed the mandrel was missing, but the place I ordered it from offered to send it sans shipping cost.

Metalheads, I sent in about 4 years worth of silver scrap...I was really holding on...can you imagine? I did manage to get the Troy weight and finally realize it was best to let it go...I plan to do this a couple times a year. Collecting everything was laborious and I'd like to be more organized after I finish a project.

Virginia Earthquake Earrrings in Sterling Silver

I had to create these, if you felt the 5.8 East Coast (Mineral, VA) earthquake as I did, you'll know why I needed to make these.

Remember when the earth moved? It was Tuesday afternoon, and I felt it. I live in Northern, VA, near D.C. I was in my home metalsmith studio looking for a book when it hit. This girl has never felt such a thing. I didn't know it was an earthquake until the stairwell banister started shaking as if a herd of 14 year olds were grabbing it and tumbling down the stairs. (my cat flew by faster than I've ever seen her move- another good indicator)

I've been thinking about how the big plates are connected.

How our spines have amazing cushion so we can bend and move and jump without crumbling like a house.
How a house made of solid brick (like mine) can seem so solid, yet when its foundation starts to shake from the ground up, its connections are tested.
I love making jewelry with movement. These earrings look as if they are half pods held together in a rigid sort of way. They are in fact not rigid, and move with your head, and are connected with no solder. They do make a gentle noise when you shake your head (yeah, shake it!) remind us of how solid we are as a whole. Each pair varies very slightly.
100% Sterling Silver.
These are 1 3/4" from top to bottom of ear wire.
The earwires are long and compliment the curves of the half domes.
All parts were cut, forged and made by me.

In preparation for Irene, yesterday I had a guy go up on our flat townhome roof and clear the gutters, turns out we have roots growing in a lower spout we share with a neighbor...we're getting stocked up for the big winds and rain. Water, batteries for flashlights, candles, yada yada, chocolate...must get next book to read, cannot imagine power out without a book.

Saying prayer for everyone in Irene's path. I fear for our beloved OBX, NC. I hope everyone stays safe and does the right thing...move inland and up high.

More insomnia since our freaky earthquake, woke at 2:30 and have been up and down since...it was good to hear hubby snore, at least one of us is working with full brain power today :)

Was hoping to get another type of new earring listing listed before my sale ends, we'll see what I end up doing today. Hoping for some soldering action.

Earthquake in Virginia

That was not fun, okay maybe for a nano-second when I realized it was an actual earthquake, HERE just outside of DC in Northern, VA, I got happy...then totally freaked.

Neighbors were outside and I called a geologist friend. (she thought it was fun)

They remind me of rain.

I've curled the earwires up like smiles...you know that feeling you get after the rain washes all your troubles away.

Is it possible? I think I'm becoming lactose intolerant as I age. I ate (almost) a whole pint of Chunky Monkey a few hours ago, this after being so proud of eating so well for so long. I was a piggy...and as soon as I took my last bite the pain kicked in, I have never felt so awful after eating ice cream.
I guess the days of huge snacks are gone, and the days of super creamy delightful dairy is waning. I've noticed I desire less cheese (almost none- never extra), hardly any milk in my coffee, or iced coffee (only 2%)... alas, last Spring I did some cartwheels on the beach in OBX. So...take that bum left knee, left deaf ear and now tummy-attack of the moo-cow treats! ha! I plan to do some more cartwheels at that same beach this fall.

I had a long busy day in the studio. Made an outstanding dinner (because nothing was burned or completely over-cooked) It feels wonderful to have my DH walk in after over an hours ride on the metro to a nice dinner...(if you knew how often he cooks for me you'd understand) ...and he's a wonderful cook. I am eyeing some ripe ripe bananas to make into some yummy bread tomorrow...baking -I can bake!

this is me pretending to escape from prison, in Lorton, VA. There used to be an actual prison here. Now it's a cluster of very cool art studios (sort of like a young young Art League or Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, VA. I went there to check out the studios and the art, like I said it's very cool.

On the back deck, I was tired, I had a camera, was feeling artsy...my hair is growing longer, hubby really likes it. I wear it up most of the time because of the high humidity and heat, here it's down. I forgot how less upkeep there was with longer hair, and how less costly it is at the salon! :-)

I have so much personal news. Though really when it boils down to telling you it doesn't seem like so much.

First, I finally went to see my doc this morning and found out that indeed I have been battling an ear infection for about 2 weeks. (you know that inner voice that says Oh if I just leave the thing alone it'll get better, or the other voice that says It's just stress...) <---in fact I almost cancelled my appt for this morning thinking I was over reacting to this ongoing pain in my right ear. (enter the main lines of Dylan's song Idiot Wind) So...I was embarassed to have waited so long to get this checked out, and relieved to get some antibiotics and drops right away. I don't feel "lazy" for resting and suddenly putting my Etsy shop on vacation the other day.

We enjoyed hosting two back to back visits from family that spanned from June into July. Can I tell you I'm tired?(I'm tired)

My sis-in-law Roo and her two kids were here. We enjoyed a 3 day stay at the beach and the kids l-o-v-e-d it. (they're from Tucson, AZ) We enjoyed waves, sand and a pool (which, it turns out is probably the culprit for this ear infection- time spent in waves and pool)

After Roo and kids left, I had one day to scrub the house up for another visitor, this was a 10 day stay.

The most interesting find while cleaning to prepare for the second visitor was toothpaste smeared along a bathroom wall, and I mean a fat line of it. (did I mention the kids are 12 and 14?)

Sunday our final visitor left and I just couldn't shake this feeling of fatigue, and at the same time an ongoing pain in my right ear.
After managing to get a couple of etsy orders out to customers I realized it was time to take a break from everything for a bit.

That said (according to the typed instructions on my antibiotic) in 7 days I should be feeling better. Though I think in just a couple of days I'll be on my feet again :-)

Is everyone feeling this heat wave? I hope you all stay hydrated with water and keep out of the sun as much as possible. In our area the air is "bad" meaning polluted. Hubby plays golf 3 days starting on Friday. You have to really love hunting down a tiny white ball for hours to want to be out in this weather.

Sweet Bart

Bart has passed away. He was 6 in April.

Blogger is experiencing hiccups and I can't seem to upload pics. I'll try again in a bit.

We loved that boy.
He was a fierce force to recon with (if you were his prey).
His prey was often a flexible straw, a non flex straw, anything plastic that moved.

Outside in our neighborhood he found live prey and brought us (almost) daily gifts. On some levels we found this upsetting and disturbing. When he was brought to the vets last night we were told this was an ultimate sign of love from him for our family.
We also found out he died of either a stroke or heart attack.

A neighbor knocked on our door sometime after 4pm. (I had just returned from the gym) and said she had some sad news. I knew right away it was Bart. I didn't want to comprehend he'd actually died. His head was laying across the mulch and his body along the neighbors sidewalk (he could have been asleep). The vet thinks he simply felt ill, rested, then died.

In our house there are caches of stored straws he's collected. It sounds goofy, but that will be the saddest thing to let go of today.

He mew'd like a breathy Marilyn Monroe and wanted to be touched and petted constantly. He hung out with us people-types in the house, he was one of us.

We love you Bart, thank you for choosing us to be your family little guy.

Wrap This Ring

The moment a drop of rain hits a pool of water it forms a pretty circle. (or does it?) This is a wrap ring made of sterling silver with equally sized granules sitting atop. It's versatile in that you can loosen or tighten it a bit. For a wider band it is super comfortable on.

Journal in the Studio

I've been keeping a journal (of sorts) in my studio. How revealing the hours appear when you turn your head back and see where the efforts have been placed.

There are little taped scraps of paper, doodles from sticky note pads and real-time date recorded.

I'm a list maker.

random thought:
There's a diary in my "keep forever box" from when I was 7, everything is written in 15 minute increments. Reading the events I've listed in my big bubble handwriting looks so halting, but that was just my outer crust. Inside I was flowing with beautiful ideas and timeless wonder.

Since March there has been a tremendous amount of stress in our lives (don't we all face stressful times?). Last night I journaled that I was ready to come out from under the stress. To live along side the stress, to laugh and dance and be my usual goofy self.

This years golf ball markers have been fun, I even made one in another language. It's a joy thinking of the kids who will be giving them to their dad's on Father's Day. Yesterday morning I made 2 in record turn around time in order to get them to our mailman and out to a customer.

Since off facebook my reading time has increased, (I was missing my books). Real live face to face time with other humans is back, wow-wee!!!!!

I might dust off my old Twitter account.

I made this for you

Everything about this ring is smooth, organic, and chunky. This is a ring I would wear often. The oval green turquoise cabochon is very chunky. The lines along in remind me of a map. This is definitely a unisex ring. My makers mark and .925 are indicated along the inner band. The size is a US 9.

I've got more items to list...first I'd like to share last weeks adventure in our suburban garden we live right outside of DC on the Virginia side ...for those of yu who aren't familiar with me.
Here, we have tiny plots of land we can use for a garden. Ours was well unattended.
I'd like to get an after shot for you to show you the whole area now that the day lilies, and white flowers (I have no real name for them so I'll call them White Flowers) are in bloom. My Day Lilies are taking over, growing like weeds, I like how hardy they stand. They were rescued from a plot of land in SW DC by a relative right before the bulldozers came. I love that they've survived so well.
We needed to add dirt and mulch because our front area is on a slope and when it rains (we have a flat roof town home) the water moves our precious dirt down into the common-area ivy) I've yet to spread our mulch, maybe this week?

Hard to believe we live in what's considered a "park" setting neighborhood in Reston...you wouldn't guess it seeing our parking lot, but we do. If you do a Google search on Coleson Cluster in Reston, VA you'll see that a woman designed these homes, we love these homes...

We drink lots of H20 in big mugs and we aren't picky about what the mugs say...

How To Size Your Finger For A Ring

I do sell ring 'sizers' in my shop, they are plastic and reusable, but nothing replaces going and having your finger sized for a specific "type" of ring :-)

Jonathan and I shared hours of gardening and a "date" out to a tool store (my kind of guy). The dirt felt so good under my hands, the burning sun revived something in me.

Changing times, so fast, so many at once...

My glasses are loose on the left hinge and I've been meaning to get them fixed for months. Lately I've been wearing my prescription sunglasses almost everywhere I go instead, the sun is so strong I don't mind.

Watched Restrepo last night, then again today, if you get a chance to see it (and you are drawn to Independent Film, war stories, I highly recommend this.

I'm also about to list this ring. It's quite unusual and reminds me very much of a ring/lariat I made a while back. You see, it is 2 rings in one and as I tried it on and photographed it I couldn't decide which element I liked better. There is an 18k Yellow Gold bauble and a 14k Yellow Gold Bauble. The Stone is Moss Agate...my makers mark is on the back. The ring is such a pretty half round rustic pattern.

Chaos into Art

I feel like a storm has opened up inside of my brain today.

This was finally finished, shined, and mailed (middle ring) my Unquiet Ring...the Blue Lapis is Angelica's, I"m keeping it safe for her right now. The other is going to be listed soon. It is a wonderful thick wavy ring, with a pattern, and 3 strong strong "sprouts" representing Spring and Renewal.

I just soldered some new Stacking Rings I plan to list, rings with set stones, I'm starting with my favorite...Turquoise...

Earlier I tried to vacuum, and sweep, and mop and I had a chaotic time staying on course in order to simply finish each task. In fact, the only task I've completed outside of my studio was an errand to pick up meds this morning, and managed fresh bedding.

Everything else I've started is sitting in piles, (sort of like the mounds of messy thoughts in my brain) all over the first floor of our home.

And someone reminded me that all I need to do is rest and come back to myself (yes I truly was unwinding) Do you know those horrible untethered thoughts?

So...now - I sit here, with my water, my pickle solultion doing its work on 5 new bezel set stackers, and my brain feeling like it's safe tucked into my place of creativity.

Thank you sweet customers for the Mother's Day orders, I'm finishing the final order today. It was sweet to come home to these and dive into the work of hand on metal, fire and connection.

Our kitties missed us and Bart particularly was a bit overjoyed to see us return yesterday. As the thunder clapped outside, and rain poured down he was spotted near the front door. He ran in past us crying the whole way (picture a raspy Marilyn Monroe meow- he truly sounds like this) into the living room and back around to the kitchen.

Later he would not leave my side and I would melt every time I looked at his blue eyes. He was caught drinking from my water cup (naughty boy!), and got into everything he possibly could.

He even brought me one of his highly coveted plastic straws (he's a plastic straw kinda dude).

Finally I had to give him a gentle push from the nest when he was seen eating some string near me. I think we're back to normal today. Scrappy is snug in her favorite place, my studio, under an open window, shaped into a brown box.

The Best Of Me Ring

It was a productive late afternoon, hot and muggy in my studio, no complaints, I have a fan and ice water :-)

This is a very chunky, striking ring made entirely by me. The 14k Yellow gold tube was made by me. It is riveted to give this ring some curves to an otherwise minimalist looking ring. My makers mark is on the inside of the ring as is .925

It is a very comfortable size 8.25

I'll be making another like this in a smaller size.

Not sure which shop to list it in, either Etsy or Artfire...tomorrow...tonight I have a fabulous dinner to cook for my hubby who is celebrating his birthday today.

My Etsy shop has been so slow this year (and most of last year) I'm thinking about looking into selling elsewhere as well...and wondering if any other Etsy shop owners have had positive experiences on ArtFire? (I posted something similar on Facebook and decided it might be better to post here).

While I understand and "get" the whole feel-good artsy feel of Etsy, I wish the changes would slow down so sellers (and buyers) could catch up with their advertising tools(I use the word advertise here with a grimace on my face).
I'm seeing more and more evidence of it becoming a very confused wanna-be social network selling site (where we really can't network) as opposed to a good old fashioned Shop. This is hard. This is hard for sellers because we often don't have the time to put into making treasuries and pushing and pushing them for "hits" to make them "hot" so they end up on the Front Page of Etsy. It's just not a task I enjoy spending my time with(I admit I'd rather spend time designing new metal pieces and rejuvenate outside of Etsy).

And it feels quite forced.

Circles, ah those circles...is Etsy planning to eventually open some great mixing bowl of cross marketing through their circles? Are we in the dark with a big A-HA moment ready to reveal itself? I have no clue...can someone fill me in?

When I look at the front page as a newbie would(not signed in) it appears full of unclear links and topics that have nothing to do with an item I might want to purchase. It really does look like never-ending links (in blue and white, facebook colors, not the usual orange of past-Etsy) that lead to a very tiny opening of a list that might take me to the earrings I'm looking for. When I do choose Jewelry, I am taken to the WHOLE jewelry section where along the top are a strand of photos of 'Brought to you by' shops...which means we must purchase these spots...per day...or...should we renew (requiring spending more money that goes to Etsy) and hope that for those fleeting seconds as new items are renewed ours is spotted by the person who is looking for exactly what I have to sell at that exact moment?

But first it wants me to sign up through a Google account to Find Friends...what? Why do I want to find friends using my (rarely used) Google email? (do you see my point or am I rambling?) Hold on, let me add a link for you to maneuver over to the next paragraph...

The Gift Guides were a fantastic way for buyers to find amazing items (I used to purchase from them)...why they were taken away is beyond me.

I love my customers, I love creating for them, I love the idea of art, the process of art and feel so frustrated about the marketing side Etsy is no longer providing for us.

My voice and opinions on this topic are like a tiny part of a drop in a huge ocean and I doubt anyone who makes decisions on Etsy will see this, but for what it's worth, it sure felt good to get it out there

These were fun to make and I was able to use some old super thick chunky sterling silver band wire I've had for ages. I also got my stamping and oxidation on...and am rocking my lightbox again. :-)

Here they are, I've got both thick and chunky cuffs which are very versatile as far as fit goes. I've also added Thinny and Chunky Sterling Silver bangles. (I'm going to schlep over to my Etsy shop soon to list these)

My Big Yellow Taxi Ring...On!

Scrappy and I often hang together, she loves her cardboard box near one of my studio windows...her tongue was just beginning to relax toward the floor :-)

Earlier this morning I gardened, here's the bottom of both sides of my front garden, stuffed with phlox and other things (not sure what, I plant and forget the names). I pulled all those little skinny green wild onions, pu my hand was stinky afterwards! Felt good to get my hands dirty. Later, as I was raking old leaves and would gently spot some flowers coming up I would talk aloud to them, yup, aloud...and greet them.

oh yes, and this is a sideway view of the garden bottom...

i'm currently craving a fountain drink...it's such a gorgeous spring day out!

Staying Busy in the Studio

I'll also be removing many items from my shop (just a heads up in case you have your eye on anything you are thinking of purchasing.) :-)

Home front news
Hubby is home sick today, he's got an icky cold with a bad cough. Probably soon I'll need to peel some fresh tangerines and heat some soup for him. I've not raised a hammer or filed any metal, I've been designing and finishing necklaces for the Home Show.

We also have taken up bowling for a fun stress-reducing time away from our worries, it's also a super fun thing to do as a couple. (if we are friends on Facebook you probably already know this). Soon we'll be getting our own balls and starting lessons. After that it'll be time to join a league.

Our daughter comes by often and we share meals, movies and laughs. It's hard for this mama to break those strings. Though I am moving forward with that.

Mothers Day is approaching and in the past it used to bring on panic (in the true sense of a panic attack) and a horrible sense of loneliness as I faced the void of the mother that never was. I have come SO far...over the years working through these maternal issues and realize that being a mother has been and is tenfold more amazing than anything I've (not)felt. My paternal grandmother was very maternal, and for her I am so grateful. (I love you Grandma)

I hope to zone in on creating some maternal pieces of jewelry for my shop to offer you :-)

Sterling Silver Ring with 18k Yellow Gold granules...I just fell so hard for this piece. (it's bold and chunky, kinda like me)

I started and finished it today...there's a lot of texture added to bring the piece to life (so to speak). I wanted the yellow gold to be a sweet serendipitous experience when you look at the ring from the top (as shown). The outer ring has been stamped with flowing leaves...the inside of the ring shank has my makers mark and .925. (I really need to get various karat stamps)
On the side of part of the outer poppy area is a texture showing shadow.

I'll be listing this later today with a shop update in my Etsy shop.

Jewelry Making Supplies, Handmade, Vintage and Found

I often come across many beautiful pieces of old jewelry, and have very good access to jewelry supplies. This being said, AutumnLeavesJewelry is now going to feature these items in my Supply section from my Etsy shop.
Currently I have a plastic ring sizer, which if used properly can size nicely.
I'm adding these today...not made by me, but oh did I fall for them hard when I saw them. I'm keeping a pair for myself to make into earrings for personal use
They each have a lovely turquoise cabochon and are seated in a bezel atop of layers of sterling silver in what looks like a flower. On the bottom are two tiny areas where an earwire or split ring, or anything your heart desires can be attached. They could be made into rings using a wire wrap technique, the sky seems to be the limit with these Lovelies! :-)

What a wonderful feeling it always is (never gets old!!!) to have someone purchase my jewelry.

This is going to its new home in Canada today...(I have one more identical Sugilite stone which is ready to be made into a ring or a pendant, please convo me if you have an interest in this...)

This was a private, custom order that went out last week...custom orders are welcome! :-)

Please please please, do a search on Etsy for Japan Relief and find lots of very nice hand made items which most or portions of the sale proceeds will go to Red Cross to help those who are suffering in Japan.

This is my donation, it has not sold yet, I'm hoping it goes soon and I will donate 80$ to the Red Cross...(this items has 12 Hearts from Etsians, which means it will hopefully sell soon)

Fresh Buds For The Vase

Making these pretties got me through a rough week, I love the colors! I'm feeling my 'Native' background with these as well.

The Sterling silver earring background is textured, adorning pretty sky blue Sleeping Beauty Turquoise cabochons. Along the fringe are more turquoise beads and red carnelian to add a POP of color. Each metal part of these earrings were smithed by me.
My makers mark is on the back and stamped .025 (for those of you who collect my work.)

I have made 2 pair, and will list them shortly in my Etsy shop. They are 2 and 1/4" from top of earwire to bottom of earring.

I have a challenge for us. Let's help Japan through our art pieces and our time.

Who else would like to donate a piece, or make pieces of art for Japan? Etsy has been doing a good job of getting donation pieces on the front page.

My challenge is to give all or at least HALF of the proceeds (minus shipping, oh okay) Even if it's an item that is not super costly it would benefit in so many ways beyond just giving money. I have been feeling sad and helpless, aside from prayers and crying and giving 10$ to the Red Cross via text I thought we could form a group on Etsy for Smithers to donate and continue to donate a piece.

This morning, while finishing a different custom order, my fears and sadness were turned into feelings of empowerment through smithing this piece...It's a simple piece, and it's made with thoughts of people living in Japan in mind.

The Etsy forums have shrunk and are hard to navigate these days...would any other smithers be willing to link our blogs for our donation pieces? We could curate some Japan Relief treasuries on Etsy and hope to make the Front Page in order for people to see and purchase and get this money donated to the Red Cross.

I think about her often and remember how nice it felt when she parted my long black hair to braid for me. How I was so annoyed at having to always wear a hat on cold days (of course she was right). She was usually wearing some sort of turquoise stone set in silver jewelry...big and chunky, and an apron, often smiling or laughing.

I'm thinking of the fond times with my grandmother. This ring was made with her in mind.

The stone is a pretty and chunky turquoise cabochon set into a handmade (by me of course) fine silver and sterling silver bezel. The side is adorned with a gorgeous hand fabricated (my handy-work) feather. The overall shape is oval.

The ring shank has a floral motif and the back of the ring has a pretty detailed feather with my makers mark (for those of you who collect my work).
This ring is a U.S. Size 8.5

Sugilite (also known as luvulite) is a relatively rare pink to purple cyclosilicate mineral with the complex chemical formula KNa2(Fe,Mn,Al)2Li3Si12O30. Sugilite crystallizes in the hexagonal system with prismatic crystals. The crystals are rarely found and the form is usually massive. It has a Mohs hardness of 5.5 to 6.5 and a specific gravity of 2.75 to 2.80. It is mostly translucent.

Sugilite was first described in 1944 by the Japanese petrologist Ken-ichi Sugi (1901–1948) for an occurrence on Iwagi Islet, Japan, where it is found in an aegirine syenite intrusive stock. It is found in a similar environment at Mont Saint-Hilaire, Quebec, Canada. In the Wessels mine in northern Cape Province of South Africa, sugilite is mined from a strata-bound manganese deposit. It is also reported from Liguria and Tuscany, Italy; New South Wales, Australia; and Madhya Pradesh, India.

Freshly Plucked From My Garden

I've been busy in my studio lately, here's the first for this week...I just love these stones (both are 12.5mm x 12mm x 4mm thick and Total 9.80ct/ 1.96gr.) These cabs were hand cut in Phrygian Valley, Turkey and are amethyst sage agates. The colors seem to get deeper the closer I was to finishing setting them. I've given them a simple serrated edge fine silver edging along the bezel and seated them on sterling silver. My makers mark and .925 are stamped on the back of each...for those of you who collect my work.
They are accompanied by very curvy ooh-la-la ear wires to compliment the curvy plumes deep inside the stones.

I was up at 3am this morning finishing them, along with a ring...yes it was that sort of sleep-deprived night. Luckily I had some cats, warm milk and my studio to fill my time :-)

Spring Necklace in Turquoise and Silver

Loving making pieces at my own pace and enjoying the ability to step back when I need to rejuvenate. My physical therapy is going great. I'm keeping my left knee taped almost 24/7, it really helps. Soon I'll see my doc for a post post knee check and may get the go ahead to start back at my regular gym.

I've procured some fresh new stones I'm really excited about. The colors! Oh the colors! Soon I'll have more goodies for you :-)

In the meantime this baby went out, on thick silver, and I like the accent above the letter A better than the previous one.

Mostly I love the feeling of being lost in the process of creating these pieces.

This is Chryoprase a translucent green cab with a few small inclusions. This gem material comes from Australia and is often called "the poor man's jade" which I've accompanied with a pretty coral cab.

She's a size 9 1/4. My makers mark is added to the back. She's set into a double bezel (made by me of course) of fine silver and the ring shank is flowery half domed sterling silver.

Mexican Crazy Lace Agate Tear Drop Shaped Earrings in Sterling Silver

Tear Drop Shaped Mexican Crazy Lace Stones set into gorgeous bezels, made by me. These are seated perfectly so they pose a high dome and the teeth along the bezel edge are all in order.

The back shows my makers mark, along with .925. There is a pretty little flower cut out as well(pierced by me) (I have not added liver of sulfur, these are bright silver) Trust me, they will oxidize on their own in natural places.

The ear wires are a little fancy and curly where they meet the bale in order to carry the bends of the luscious pattern in the lacy stone up through the whole piece.

These will not last too long in my shop, I'll be listing them shortly.

Meanwhile, on a personal front, our daughter has moved out, and is doing well...she's working 2 jobs and working with me in our mother/daughter shop LuxeCoop (see link to right) We just shipped out a wonderful camisole yesterday which she custom made...it has found a lovely new home in NYC.

So...I think in taking this photo these flowers represent our family, our daughter is with us, close by, and even comes by often, but is making her own way in this big world...

My knee, oh my knee! Who doesn't have some sort of ailment, itch or "thing" at my age? I continue with physical therapy and my muscles surrounding the joint grow stronger all the time, there are days when I wake up and take a few steps and my knee feels like bone on bone, someone said it's a sure indicator we are alive! Another friend uses her knee as a weather barometer! (Just wait you super young people, it will happen...you will feel your bones, and you will be fine!)

Later, my friend Jodi and her sweet baby are coming by for a visit, I've heard SO MUCH about this precious girl I feel I already know her...:-)
