Back view of sterling silver pin:

The last brooch I purchased was from a Smithsonian Museum gift shop (years ago). I still have it but haven't worn it since I quit my office job. It's a replica of a very very old cat, Egyptian looking...I'll need to look back at the write up of the origin, but i fell hard for it and had to have it!
I've wanted to make brooches for quite some time. My metalsmith instructor gave a lesson on how-to. So i took the leap...and making my first was such a treat! It won't be for sale, as it's my first but I wanted to show it to you. I hope you like it...
It is all sterling silver, including the mechanism and pin on the back.
If you like the look of this please check my shop for more in the near future, I plan to have lots of pretty pretty brooches. :-)
I'm probably going to give my shop the weekend off and focus on my studio move, family, naps and reading.

I love it!!! I don't think brooches ever really went "out" except for maybe high fashion. I made my aunt a dove brooch for Christmas last year, but she's not really into artisan type things so it's probably still in the box. I really like the little snippets of poetry that you've been incorporating into your pieces. I always look forward to checking out your blog to what else you've come up with.

ps I finally did it!! I opened up my shop with a whole one item. I'm going to make another piece to add this weekend......baby steps.
Care- Love the piece, the layering of the silver really adds some depth to it, plus the sentiment is just so lovely. I personally love a broach, so I'm betting there are others who will appreciate it as well. Enjoy the weekend (take a nap for me will ya-I am TIRED).Congrats on your other poetry piece flying from your shop!
Pam - Totally checking out your shop, is it Market Basket Designs? I would love to open an Etsy shop in the future, but I think it will be a while. I can't wait to see your busines grow, good luck!
HI Pam HI susie, thanks, they are so much fun to make, and you are free from sizing:P! omgosh Pam, I have to go see your shop. I'm really dragging...lol...going to put my shop on vaca mode for the weekend.
*waves to my other friend in Reston who I took a class with! I just saw your email!*
Double nap susie? Yes indeed, I'll extend it! I say that then I don't nap...
oh my gosh I was *just* thinking about making some brooches the other day! I asked the peeps at my local supply shop and they only have base metal pin backs :-( Its really lovely Care - You must take a pic for us of you wearing it!!

Carolyn, you should take time out. How's your tongue? Believe it or not, that's not the first time I've ever asked that question...I have several friends who have gotten tongue rings. I also have a friend who got a couple of unusual piercings when she turned 41. I'm not saying what I had to ask her. Good luck with relocating your studio. You've motivated me to organize my "bench" aka dining room table. ;)
Susie, it's the other one.
Love ya,
Pam
Jaim! Congrats on the gg and the etsy email!!!
oooooooooooooo, I lubber this!!! Totally. Love the design - LOVE the quote -- its one I've wanted to do something with for a long time. I might have ot buy some pin findings - I have only made them in the past.
Also, metalsmithing class!? I'm so jealous. :)
Wow - that looks fabulous! And the little pin thingy worked so you didn't have to break out the duct tape - nice!
BTW - next weekend is anniversary - can't wait to give hubby the artwork you created for him!
Awww . . . really lovely.
Beautiful work, yet again, didn't know EE Cummings, but my interest was piqued whilst listening to a radio prog the other day and learned that The 'moral majority' tried to ban him from school curriculum.
Rebel!
Hooray - the start of many I hope!

Morning Janice! It was not a recent class, a series of classes I used to take...I would love to go back! ($ and time)<---need both! :P
Dana i hope he likes it!!! :) Happy early anniversary!!! Yay!
thanks liz and Nicola, i didn't realize how easy it is to solder a pin back to metal. The 3 pieces had me intruiged and scared, but measure twice and it's all good.
Cheeky that is so funny...the Rebel comment! :P
Ahh, I see. I would love to take a full course, instead of just a workshop here and there. Maybe one day....I am taking a David Huang workshop in August, in Kensington - have you ever been to Creative Metalworks? I've done one other workshop there - great place. OK, now I really have to run - Frostburg here I come!
